Chris Smalling could be heading to London this summer after Manuel Pellegrini added him to the list of players he wants to spend his £70 million transfer kitty on. The Chilean has been looking at quality players with Premier League experience and has been alerted by the fact that Smalling could become available.
Smalling was dropped from England’s team for the World Cup after a poor season with Manchester United, and he has also failed to impress Jose Mourinho who has been fielding him only because his other alternatives are worse.
Mourinho is looking to sign a new central defender before the start of next season, with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld top of his wish list. Any new defender that comes through would push Smalling further down the pecking order and he would not want to be on the bench.
Reports from Sun Sport claim that Pellegrini is on the market for a new central defender and Smalling is a major target. The Hammers have signed Ryan Federicks from Fulham and they are still in talks with Swansea over the transfer of Alfie Mawson, but Smalling is considered more experienced option and they would jump at the chance to sign him.
