Tottenham are playing hardball with Manchester United over the sale of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld as they have reportedly rejected an opening bid of £55 million from the Red Devils.
The defender is Jose Mourinho’s major transfer target this summer as the Portuguese boss looks to bolster his defence and challenge for the Premier League next season. However, the Red Devils now face paying more than they have bargained for to get the defender.
Alderweireld is looking for a move away despite claiming that his future is at the hands of Spurs whom he still owes two years of service. He has declined their new contract offer and that has angered Mauricio Pochettino whom he followed to White Hart Lane from Southampton.
Manchester United may now look to explore other options to pull the deal through. One option they have is to offer Anthony Martial to the Lilywhites and get cash as well as Alderweireld in return, but Mourinho has to decide if he doesn’t want Martial again for that to pull through.
