Tottenham would have to pay a club record £48 million if they want to sign Ajax teenager, Matthijs de Ligt.
Mauricio Pochettino is looking to sign the 18 years old as a replacement for the unsettled Toby Alderweireld who may move to Manchester United this summer. De Ligt turns 19 this summer, but he is already an established member of the Ajax first team as well as the Dutch national team.
Several top clubs have been monitoring his situation and the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea are actively looking to sign him this summer, however, Pochettino believes he can get hold of his man if Alderweireld’s future can be decided quickly.
The Belgian has rejected a new Spurs deal and played just 21 times for them last season. He has interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG, with the French side prepared to pay £40 million for his signature.
De Ligt has been open about his future and he has done little to suggest he wants to remain at Ajax and further his development.
If Tottenham fails to land de Ligt, they would move for 24 years old Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascalles even though Rafael Benitez has made it clear that the former England youth international is not for sale.
