Liverpool all but confirmed their place in the Champions League quarterfinals last night by winning FC Porto 5-0 away from home. This victory was made possible by a hat trick from Sadio Mane and one goal each from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
The Senegalese star became the first Liverpool player to score a European hat trick away from home since Michael Owen did against Spartak Moscow in the year 2002.
The Senegalese forward disclosed afterwards that he was inspired to score his way to the match ball by Jamie Caragher.
The England and Liverpool legend was covering the match for Norwegian TV station Viasport, gave Mane a half time pep talk which helped him net the treble.
According to Mane Caragher urged him to “score more goals” and he took that advice to heart and delivered.
Liverpool have now made the return leg at Anfield a formality as it would be almost impossible for FC Porto to win 6-0 at Anfield. The Reds would not be in competitive action until 24th of February and they would travel for a warm weather training camp in Marbella Spain on Friday.
