Manchester United are monitoring the contract situation of Belgium international Toby Alderweireld as he continues to disagree with Spurs over a new deal.
The Belgian is one of the highly rated defenders in Europe at the moment and he has been demanding that the club makes him one of their highest earners, however, the Lilywhites think otherwise.
He has just returned from injury, but since he declared himself fit three weeks ago, he has only featured for 90 minutes in a single game –Spurs FA Cup tie against Newport.
He was left out of their Champions League squad to face Juventus last night and the club’s fans are baffled by the decision not play him. Sun Sport is claiming that he has become a target for Jose Mourinho who looks set to axe the duo of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones next summer.
The Portuguese manager knows Alderweireld from his time in Spain when the Belgian was turning out for Atletico Madrid, and he has continued his impressive form in the Premier League.
His current deal has 18 months to run and he would be available for £25 million from next summer. United are hoping they can tempt him by offering him even more than he is currently demanding from Spurs.
