It’s been a bit of a stressful week for Chelsea fans but some elements of comedy too.
The striker situations looks to be the most urgent of all positions with the West London club being linked with Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch, Edin Dzeko and Jamie Vardy. Although the Crouch rumours are quite comical, those of Dzeko and Vardy appear to be quite serious but there are barriers to both situations especially Dzeko who would be cup-tied for the Champions League.
It might well boil down to money and having a stint in London however once you’ve been to Rome and tasted the delights there, London can seem a dark cold place. Roma aren’t keen to let him go either, it would need to take a big cash offer for someone over 30 and what happens if Conte leaves in the summer and a new manager wants to freshen things up? It’s a difficult situation at the moment and we don’t envy their position at all.
Batshuayi hasn’t been the hottest up front and this doesn’t help in finding suitors. He may well have a great weekend and net a hat-trick but whether that changes the clubs’ mind is anyone’s guess. We do know that he won’t be involved in a swap deal with Dzeko but that a few clubs could likely take him on loan. Stoke City are in need of a striker but it won’t be the ideal situation for the player.
Interest in Bayern’s Arturo Vidal is waning due to his age but Alex Telles of FC Porto is still of interest for the right-back slot, possibly as a fast replacement for Zappacosta. Emerson Palmieri is also of potential interest to Chelsea but his injury record and poor work permit management have proved to be problematic in the past and could prove to be a barrier yet again.
Although Chelsea re being investigated by FIFA for signing players underage, this will have no effect nor impact of any dealings this January.
Chelsea fans will of course be hoping for a better week of transfers next week, especially with just 11 days left!
