Chelsea were so desperate to land a world class goalkeeper as a replacement for Thibaut Courtois that they activated the release clause of Jan Oblak.
The Blues were left stunned by Thibaut Courtois who went AWOL to force through a move to Real Madrid this month. The Belgian had been expected back on the weekend of the Community Shield, however, he decided to stay back in Belgium and told Chelsea he wasn’t interested in playing for them again and wanted a move to Real Madrid.
Los Blancos had bided £35 million for his signature which the Blues had turned down as Maurizio Sarri wanted to speak to him first. However, when it became clear that Courtois had made up his mind to leave, the Blues turned their attention to Oblak.
Talksport claims that Chelsea paid Oblak’s £100 million release clause, but the Slovenian decided against moving to the London club which prompted them to pay the release clause of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kepa who is just 23 became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he moved to the Blues, breaking the record of Liverpool’s Allison barely a month after the Brazilian had broken Ederson’s record to join Manchester City last season.
