Arsenal would have loved for the transfer deadline to be adjusted by a few more hours as they looked to get a deal for a defender over the line.
The Gunners had one of their busiest winter transfer windows last month as they brought in Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mhkitaryan, among others, but they also wanted a new defender to help their ageing defence.
Their top target was Jonny Evans of West Brom, but they could not agree a deal with the Baggies and the defender was reluctant to sign for a club in London. However, just after the transfer window was shut, rumours started making rounds that they tried to bring in a defender from the Serie A.
Per the reports, the Gunners made a last ditch attempt to bring in Kostas Manolas from AS Roma, but it was too late for Roma to consider their offer.
However, respected Spanish transfer expert, Guillem Balague, claimed the Gunners indeed tried to bring in a defender on deadline day, but it wasn’t Manolas. The Greek defender has been linked with a move to the Premier League before as Chelsea tried to sign him in the summer.
The Gunners’ failure to bring in defensive reinforcements this month could spoil their chances of making it into the top four especially after they capitulated at Swansea on Tuesday.
