In a totally random approach to the football World Cup in Russia, we decided today was the perfect time to take a look at the latest World Cup odds and betting. I mean, there are 331 days to go right, now is the PERFECT time!
Okay, we’ll be honest, the fact is, there isn’t really all that much meaningful football around right now. We’re bored. The Premier League is still a good few weeks away and our thoughts have turned to next summer’s World Cup.
We may still be a long way away from knowing the full line-up of 32 teams but hey, there is less than a year to go and that will do for us. Russia have qualified as hosts, Brazil have already done enough in CONMEBOL qualifying and heavyweights Iran have booked their birth too. Only another 29 teams to go!
Latest World Cup Odds
Germany are the favourites for World Cup glory at the time of writing and the defending champions can be backed at 11/2 with Bet365 and other bookies. Brazil are next up at 8/1 with Spain the only other side at single-digit odds. In what could prove to be a very open tournament, there are probably another seven teams who, if they make it to Russia, will feel they have an outside chance of going all the way.
Those include the likes of Argentina at 10/1, Belgium at 20/1, Portugal at 28s, the hosts themselves at 35/1 and perhaps even Chile, who can be backed at huge odds of 40/1. Of course, Argentina still have some work to do to make it to the 2018 World Cup but they should pull through and then with Lionel Messi in the side anything is possible.
Having an ante post bet on who will win the World Cup at this early stage comes with plenty of risk. However, it also gives you the benefit of getting a good few extra months of excitement out of your wager. There are still a decent number of qualifying games to go and you can cheer on your pick through those as well, assuming you don’t fancy Brazil, Russia or Iran.
Ultimately we feel the value bet right now has to be Brazil at 8/1 with Betfair. Of course, you won’t get to cheer them through the rest of the CONMEBOL campaign (well, you can, but they have essentially already done the hard work) but on balance they look overpriced to go all the way in – did we mention? – 331 days’ time.
In Neymar they have a superstar, they have excellent strength in depth, the right blend of youth and experience and their morale and confidence have been rebuilt by a brilliant qualification campaign. Brazil have, of course, won the World Cup five times and they know what it takes to succeed, especially away from South America. All of that makes 8/1 look big to us and so Brazil are our pick.
